Or so I'd like to think. I mean, I still believe the US is something akin to a federal constitutional republic, despite this administration's efforts to the contrary.

Tho the "constitutional" bit is a bit of a misnomer as of late.

Don't just email your Congressman. Email your House Judiciary Committee and ask them to start hearings on H.Res. 333, Articles of Impeachment for Vice President Cheney.

It is my opinion that the bulk of the Democratic party's response to this has been weak and pitiful. OUR REPRESENTATIVES NEED TO GROW SOME BALLS AND REPRESENT THEIR PEOPLE, THE LAWS OF THIS LAND, AND THE FOUNDATION OF THIS GOVERNMENT. If our representatives won't stand up on their own, there is even more pressing need for US to speak. Show that you care, because SILENCE means that you are TACITLY CONSENTING.

HOLD YOUR FUCKING GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS, GOD DAMN IT. THIS IS YOUR FUCKING COUNTRY. ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE THIS LYING DOWN?

Done.

I feel the same way.

I added the following to the petition:

This administration has repeatedly shown only contempt for the people
and the laws of the United States. The combined memory lapses of Scooter
Libby and Alberto Gonzales are greater than that contained in most old age homes--or else they, too, believe it's unnecessary to tell the truth under oath since power is more important than the Constitution.

I'm guessing it's the second one.

This destruction of our democracy has got to stop!

I am so frustrated, because I know most people don't know (or seem to care) how we've turned from what was a democracy (a flawed democracy, but a democracy nonetheless) into what is, in essence, a corrupt monarchy. And I don't know how to wake these sleeping zombies up!!!!

(Can you tell I'm a bit crazed?)

I think people *will* take it lying down because they are uninformed and simply do not care. I teach college students-- you would not believe how many of them are completely clueless as to what is happening in the world. If it doesn't affect them in a painfully direct way, then it doesn't matter, it doesn't exist. People are happily distracted by the idiot box and cheap, plastic crap, so all is right with the world. It makes me absolutely sick to see the utter lack of interest in the hijacking of our country displayed by so many freedom- lovin' Americans. Happy fucking fourth of July. Pass the despot, please!

FWIW, I wrote to my senators and my congressman. The first time I've ever written a real letter and not just sent a form letter.

Thank you, lady. It is my belief that every letter helps. Our politicians cannot know how the people that they represent feel about issues if we don't speak up.

Though I understand perfectly how prevalent the apathy is in our country – I see it every single day – I also believe that we can rise above it. The people that do care just need to make themselves heard, and we can’t let ourselves succumb to an easy cynicism in the face of all the ugliness that this administration has put this country through.

I grew up in a state and culture where no one thinks of anything else outside of their small circle of existence. Or if they do, it's all someone else's words that were put into their mouths. I have not fit into that culture for many, many years but it is so frustrating for me to come home and see how pervasive it is.

I love that you actually come up with useful, thoughtful things that can be done for the better. Er, that sounds banal but I hope you know what I mean.

This may be my first non-form letter. Oh!
