Can someone please explain to me how being strong on national security and strong against terrorism has to equal shitting on the Constitution and complete disregard for the rule of law in this fucking day and age?

There is no explanation, only lies and equivocation.

Yes. Altemeyer's brilliant book I have just finished reading, The Authoritarians can.

Basically, he explains that there is a type of people who are both very much afraid of many things (terrorism included); who do not think critically about the ideas in their heads, and thus hold contradictory ideas without realizing it; who are very prejudiced; and who believe in law and rules but believe in authority over the rule of law, so would support a strong leader who will protect them from danger, even if such a leader disregards the rule of law completely.

Those are the people who elected Bush. Those are the people who surround him and support him.

And what is scariest, the fundamentalist Christian right-wing is a horde of these people, organized.

I spent yesterday afternoon reading it. Go read it, everyone; it's free, it's funny, his research is impeccable, and it's a scary, scary book.
