Barbara Boxer on Telecom Immunity

Really, truly worth a few minutes of your day.

- - -

Conversely, here's Diane Feinstein's crap automated answer to people who contacted her about her stance on the FISA Capitulation.

- - -

Wash a little of that garbage out of your mouth by watching Chris Dodd's speech on the Senate floor, and reading the statment he issued today.

- - -

It really baffles me that so few Americans care about this issue. I am perplexed and saddened beyond belief.

I really thought the Boxer video was worth watching, I rolled my eyes at Feinstein's words, and I'm still fighting with Flip4Mac to get it to read the WMV video on Dodd's site.

I applaud you for being so vocal about this and I also saw Ted's post on the forum. You always make sure to spread word about issues that you feel are important, and they are things that tend to get so little exposure and attention that I appreciate having them stuck under my nose.

The thing that has baffled me so much in all of this is how little response there seems to be, both in the media and from American citizens. I have a long-lost background of disinterest in politics so I understand the "eyes glazed over" and "it doesn't affect my daily life" response that many people may have, but lately there are *so many* things going wrong in the administration/government that I can't fathom why more aren't doing something or taking notice or questioning what their leaders are doing. I ACTUALLY GIVE A SHIT about what happens. These things are truly important and I can't sit back and let corrupt dipshits fuck things up for our and future generations including that of my child.

End semi-coherent rant.

I was complaining to a friend of mine a few days ago that its baffling to me that the country at large doesn't give a fuck that the Constitutional amendment that protects Americans from unreasonable search and seizure has been compromised, and she came back with the most depressing, chilling response.

"(They don't care) because the trains still run on time."

Rant forthcoming.

i just can't function today, it's so depressing. we knew it probably wouldn't go our way, even though my senators voted the way we wanted them to...but it's just so disheartening.

and what was in the headlines today? something about JonBenet.

While I am truly sickened and saddened by what happened to that poor girl, and I'm glad that the police are starting to finally get somewhere with their investigation, this news really needs to get bumped down a little further on the front page, dontcha know, when you consider everything else that's going on in this country. ;)

I agree, it's more of a local/regional story considering the national news that is going unreported.

Hmm, I wonder if Karl Rove will be charged with contempt?

I brought this issue up in my teenage girls group this afternoon. Not only were they clueless, they didn't care and didn't want to hear about it.

See Charlee bang her head against a brick wall. :/

Thanks for helping to bring me around on this. I wrote Obama an email yesterday expressing my dismay over his vote and questioning any further donations. I mean, they had 69 yay's. He could have taken any stand he wanted to.

Here's hoping the courts throw it out on it's ass.

Obama's position on this issue broke my heart.

Here's hoping he does bring on Chris Dodd as a running mate.

Ironically at this same email check when I got this response from you, I also got a response to my email to the Obama Campaign which threatened to withhold future donations because of his support for FISA.

They basically copied his note to supporters that was on his website this week.

I think the response is insufficient and I disagree with his vote, but I'm glad he has at least taken the time to directly address it. It's interesting that I can still find things about him to respect even when I so thoroughly disagree with his vote. I respect his willingness to negotiate a compromise and vote for it even though (by definition) he doesn't agree with everything in the bill. That shows that he negotiates in good faith.

And given that it passed with 69 fucking votes, perhaps this really is the best FISA bill we could get. And his reasoning for voting on it - that we got important limitations on government worked into the bill - is absolutely a legitimate concern. And given that he voted against immunity three times, I believe that he honestly opposes it and simply couldn't get it taken out of the Bill during negotiations.

And when I rationalize on behalf of the guy I've wanted to be my President since I first heard of him 4 years ago - I hope that maybe he knows (the Con Law Prof that he is) that the most obnoxious parts of the bill will be overturned anyways. That maybe that's his plan but he just can't speak it aloud. But that's a rationalization that I'll make for my side that I'd never give a Republican.

Heya doll, sorry to stray off topic, but I sent a big arsed package off to your good self last Tuesday to the lab address -keep eyes peeled :) Hard to miss, I found a big hot pink box at Australia Post so natch i went for that :)

Oh & sorta on topic, My dad & I were mighty impressed with Obama's reaction to Iran's latest muscle flexing on TV last night, we both agree that if he can trump McCain on foreign policy/diplomacy issues (his only percieved weak spot, though we beg to differ) He can start moving furniture into the Whitehouse already :)

I like him. If he's made President the rest of us outside the US who get dragged into its fights will breathe a BIG sigh of relief. The rest of the World feels better when the biggest military power on the planet is not run by a warmonger...

:)
