Long. LOL! I'm so tired! I had a lot of fun at DD; Del and Sue are wonderful people, and its always awesome hanging out with customers. Bad baby sleep luck, though... Lil, of course, slept well every night within the las week or so, except the one before the trunk show, the one before Thanksgiving, and last night. Heh.

How was your weekend?!

Long. 22 hours in the car, and 2 days each with my parents and my hubby's whole extended family. The extended family visit may be summed up "18 people, 8 dogs, 4 bathrooms" and has more than the occasional over-tone of reality show. I kept expecting FOX to show up with cameras. (This is lessened by the fact that nobody's potty training THIS year.)

It is nice to see everyone, even if it does remind us how happy we are to NOT be close to all of the family, geographically.

I disagree when it comes to depictions of erotica and children. It becomes less academic when it's happened to you. This isn't a slam at anyone, just an observation.

I've been raped, but it doesn't change my views about freedom of speech, y'know?

Yeah, I do know, and I proudly wave the freedom of speech flag about other things that have affected me being female, lesbian, older, fat, Jewish, and on and on and on. Because that's me as an adult. I truly believe all of that has a cut off when it's aimed at children.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just curious. What are you saying is harming children?

Oh, I don't think that you're being argumentative at all :) I don't know if I'll be able to explain it clearly; I have Lupus, and it affects my cognitive functions. Sometimes the words just don't come when I need them.

Basically I believe that staying neutral on writings/paintings that eroticize children is dangerous to them. It normalizes what has long been a cultural taboo and a taboo for good reason. It separates them out as a specific subgroup for at best objectification and at worst victimization. Kids are vulnerable. I don't believe that childhood is sacred or kids need to be coddled, but they also don't need to be on sale for sexual fantasies. They don't get to speak for themselves, so we have to.

Did I make any sense or just muddy the water?

Because it's the foundation of protecting "good" speech. If someone disagrees with me, I don't want them to shut up, I want to try to change their mind. And if they can't speak, neither can I, so then how can I change their mind? Pretty elementary to me.
