Governor Slashes Funding for Core AIDS Programs

In addition to recent cuts from the state legislature, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday unilaterally erased $52 million more from the State Office of AIDS’ budget, now totaling $82 million less of AIDS funding.

These critical funds disappeared with a mark of a pen as the governor used his line-item veto power Tuesday, targeting programs and services helping the most vulnerable in our state. The governor’s line-item veto budget would bring AIDS funding back to pre-1985 levels.

It's more of the neo-Con "if something bad happens to you, you deserve it, beeyotch!" dogma.

What gets me is that many of the people who buy into it hook, line, and sinker, are the same ones who defected (or would have, had the been around) to the Republican party with the Dixiecrats. The biggest way that the GOP benefited from getting Thurmond and his ilk was the fine tradition of capable rabble-rousing that used to belong wholly to the Dems. So you have Republicans wrapping themselves in the flag (now with Scriptural(TM) embroidery!), and political rallies that look more like old-time, downhome tent revivals, and that really appeals to a lot of folks.

The upshot of this is that I might be related to some of the very people who have been led by the nose into believing this bullshit, and I am deeply embarrassed by that fact. Blood does not always tell, contrary to popular wisdom.
